The Samsung Genio QWERTY is not a good mobile phone, due to its bad keyboard and a few lacking factors in terms of specs as it is below average device at best. The worst part is that it is supposed to be a mobile phone dedicated to messaging capabilities.

Due to its bad keyboard, it is not able to achieve this purpose at all. It is, fortunately, a GSM device (with EDGE support nonetheless), and compared to other GSM phones, the Genio QWERTY does provide decent functionality. For its price however, you might be expecting a little more in terms of how well the device was made.

At least in the features category, it does okay -except for the really low internal memory which is just too low for any mobile phone. The only saving grace this mobile phone has is its external looks. The excellent design made specifically for the younger market give the entire Genio series a fresh new look that you rarely see in other phones.

Compared to its Genio siblings, the Touch and the Pro; QWERTY is the odd little brother that simply does not fit. A redesign for the QWERTY should have been in order since they have already planned to release it in the UK.

The Genio Series

Samsung made the Genio series to target a much younger demographic than their usual market. This is a good tactic since the new perspective has enabled them to envision and create an entirely fresh new line of mobile phone designs that incorporates a youthful look with excellent features.

However, this standard seems to have been lost with the QWERTY as most ergonomic factors seem to have been thrown out the window. The biggest factor is the keyboard layout. We have no complaints about how squeezed in the buttons are; you expect that from a mobile phone, what we are not happy with is the way the buttons have been laid flat against each other.

This is a very limiting factor since it makes it hard to determine if you are pressing the right button. Having big fingers is also going to be a problem for many people. A simple solution of lifting the center of each button or shaping the buttons differently might have helped make the typing process a lot easier.

Hardware and Features

At least the Samsung Genio QWERTY has decent hardware for a GSM device. The 2.2 inch screen is significantly large enough for most purposes. It also plays a lot of media file formats and has an FM radio function. You can also use this as your music player thanks to the 3.5mm audio jack on the top right portion of the phone. One change we would really like to see is the 40MB internal storage expanded. Even with the microSD card slot, having limited internal storage is a big no-no in today's devices, even on GSM mobile phones.

Getting Around

There is no escaping the bad keyboard, and since this device is made for messaging; the name does say QWERTY -the level of disappointment we get is just to hard to get over. Our answer is to go look for another keyboard based device instead.
